An integral part of aboriginal history , Mount Mulligan is known by indigenous people as the birthplace of the Rainbow Serpent and is regarded as one of the most sacred sites in Far North Queensland. The sandstone bluff is also attributed as being Queensland's oldest Aboriginal site and is connected with the KuKu Djungan people who call the mountain "Ngarrabullgan". Evidence of human occupation in shelters around the base of the sandstone ridge dates back some 37,000 years. Ingigenous legend isn't the only thing Mulligan is noted for - the mountain holds some rather grim history for white settlers too. The small town that flanks the mountain was a cool mine until in 1921, Queensland's worst mining disaster strick, with an explosion killing all 75 miners trapped underground. Nowadays the station has approximately 2,300 head of both Brahman and free range cattle which are mustered three times a year by the station owner Gordon Pringle and stockhands with the help of horses, working dogs and helicopters.
